Solomon Islands and Brisbane Roar Share the Spoils in Historic Friendly

The Solomon Islands national team and Brisbane Roar played to a 1-1 draw in an intense and physical friendly on Saturday night, marking the first time an A-League club has played in the island nation.

The hosts took the lead in the 40th minute through Clivert Sam, whose goal from a corner gave the Solomon Islanders momentum heading into halftime. Brisbane Roar equalised in the second half through Georgios Vrakas, capitalising on a sustained spell of pressure. The visitors dominated possession and created several chances from set pieces, while the Solomon Islanders fought back late, including a stoppage-time break from Leslie Bobby that resulted in a red card for a Brisbane defender.

The draw provided valuable experience for the Solomon Islands ahead of next month’s MSG Prime Ministers Cup in Port Moresby. For Brisbane Roar, the game extended their engagement with Pacific football under the PacificAus Sports Challenge, highlighting growing regional ties.

That connection is particularly significant as the new Solomon Kings FC — formed through a partnership between the Solomon Islands Football Federation and Brisbane-based Wynnum Wolves FC — prepares to represent the country in the upcoming OFC Professional League. Many of the national team players who featured in Saturday’s match are expected to form the core of the Solomon Kings squad when the professional competition begins in January 2026.
