Overseas interest is building around Fiji’s newly formed franchise, Bula Boys FC, which is preparing to compete in the inaugural OFC Professional League set to run from January to May next year. According to The Sun, Fiji Football Association (Fiji FA) chief executive Mohammed Yusuf confirmed that queries have come in from both investors and professionals seeking opportunities with the club.
Yusuf explained that potential investors are exploring options to put money into the team, while coaches, physiotherapists, medical staff, and performance analysts have also expressed interest in joining the project. “Everything is progressing well and we’re adhering to all the requirements before we make our submission to OFC on October 1,” Yusuf said. Each franchise must file more than 160 separate documents to secure its license.
The Fiji FA Board of Control is scheduled to meet in Ba on October 4, following an investor meeting earlier that week. Pending board approval, an official announcement will be made on Bula Boys FC, including details of the club’s new board of directors and its formal entry into the Pro-League.
OFC officials, including general secretary Franck Castillo and Professional League manager Stuart Larman, have outlined the structure of the new competition. Eight participating teams will play five clusters of fixtures in 10-day circuits, totaling 14 games each in a double round-robin format. A sixth circuit will feature playoffs leading into sudden-death semi-finals. Teams will have 10-day breaks between clusters for recovery and preparation.
Castillo stressed the importance of the new league, highlighting that OFC will cover NZ$10 million annually for club travel and accommodation. “The launch of the OFC Professional League is a transformative moment for football in Oceania,” he said. “It will elevate the standard of the game and provide a competitive platform for our clubs and players to thrive internationally.”
Meanwhile, progress continues on the Fiji FA’s new stadium in Lomolomo, Lautoka. Following approval from the Director of Town and Country Planning, GeotechTesting Fiji has been engaged to conduct soil and aggregate testing. The initial phase will raise the ground level by one metre at a cost of around $2 million.
